MEETING PLACE Led by Michael Hume The Upper Beaches only got its name about 15 years ago. Before it became today's residential neighbourhood, members of the Town of York's elite, one of whom had the misfortune to be killed in a duel, built their country homes; North America's third golf course was here and twice hosted the Canadian Open; and a pond was the main source of ice for the east end of Toronto, until the Health Department learned a creek feeding into the pond ran through a graveyard. The graveyard's still here. So where's the pond? And why does Gerrard Street shift north at Coxwell? And speaking of northward shifts, why was a buidling on Kingston Road moved 150 yards north? http://janeswalk.org/canada/toronto/upper-beaches-duel-graves-and-golf-forgotten-waters-and-moderately-priced-homes/
